About

Curiosity starts it.
Mettle makes it.

Bits And Mettle is an independent studio making products for the long efforts in life: building software, getting stronger and telling your career story.

The name

Built from bits.

bits /bɪts/

noun, plural. The smallest units of information a computer works with. Also, small pieces of something larger.

Made with mettle.

mettle /ˈmɛt(ə)l/

noun. The ability to meet a challenge with spirit and resilience.

Everything worth making is built from small pieces, and finished by someone who keeps going.

Why it exists

Most good work is unglamorous. It is the next commit, the next set, the next honest draft. The tools for that work should respect it: clear about what they do, careful with your data, and built to help you keep going rather than to keep you scrolling.

Bits And Mettle is a home for those tools. Each product has its own purpose and personality. Behind all of them is the same belief: good ideas deserve the care it takes to make them real.

How the work gets done

  1. 01

    Useful before loud.

Each product starts from a real problem: reviewing work from coding agents, following a program set by set, telling a career story that holds up.

  2. 02

    Show the work honestly.

Samples are labelled as samples, fictional data is called fictional, and a demo never pretends to be a live system.

  3. 03

    Keep a person in charge.

Agents propose, people decide. In Trailside a person approves the change. In Narrative Pro you check the facts before anything is reused.

  4. 04

    Look under the hood.

Understand how something really works before trusting it. It is the reverse engineer’s habit, and it shapes how every product is tested and explained.

  5. 05

    Progress over polish.

One commit, one rep, one story at a time. Small steps, kept up, are what add up.

The stack

Everything we build lands on the same foundation.

Underneath everything

Model-agnostic AI

We use the most appropriate model for each job and switch when a better one arrives. Narrative Pro drafts and grades with it, and Trailside hands work to coding agents while a person approves the result.

01 / Hosting

Netlify

Deploys straight from git, HTTPS by default, and nothing to babysit at 2 a.m.

Used in Strength Programs, Narrative Pro and this site.

02 / Data

Supabase

Authentication and row-level security that nobody should reinvent.

Used in Strength Programs and Narrative Pro.

03 / Data

PostgreSQL

A real relational database underneath it all.

Used in Strength Programs and Narrative Pro.

04 / Types at the edges

Drizzle

Database schemas live in code, typed end to end.

Used in Strength Programs and Narrative Pro.

05 / Types at the edges

Zod

Data is checked the moment it enters the system.

Used in Strength Programs and Narrative Pro.

06 / Language

TypeScript

Everywhere, strict. The compiler catches what a tired developer misses.

Used in all three products.

07 / Framework

SvelteKit

An early bet that paid off: less code, fast pages, and server and browser logic in one place.

Used in all three products.

08 / Interface

React

A long production track record, and the right choice when a project or team already lives in it.

Part of the wider toolkit, beyond the three products.

09 / Desktop

Electron

Desktop apps built from the same web skills, for when a product needs to live on the computer.

Part of the wider toolkit, beyond the three products.

10 / Proof

Playwright

Every flow gets a real browser test before it is called done.

Used in all three products.

11 / Proof

Vitest

Fast unit tests that run on every change.

Used in Strength Programs and Narrative Pro.

The whole stack

Powered from underneath.

Every layer is chosen once, used everywhere, and tested before it ships.

Who’s behind it

A note from

Hi, I’m Wink.

By day I work in operations research. Before that, I worked in cyber warfare and led a reverse engineering shop, and I hold the GREM certification for reverse engineering malware. Software engineering is what I love most, and Bits And Mettle is where I do it.

Bits And Mettle is the home for the products I’m building: Trailside, Strength Programs and Narrative Pro. They solve different problems, and I wanted room for more than one idea.

I work on all of it: the product, the interface and the code, mostly in SvelteKit and Python, with coding agents helping. Trailside is the tool I wanted for that. It shows what the agents are doing, what needs my attention and what’s ready for review. We’ll use Trailside to build Trailside.

Narrative Pro helps people in any career write about their work. Strength Programs is for training, one session at a time.

Reverse engineering taught me to understand how something works before I trust it. I still work that way, whether it’s software or the engine swap in my 300ZX.

There’s a real person behind these products who cares about how they work and how they feel. I take the work seriously, but I want there to be some curiosity and fun in it too. If something here sparks an idea, I’d love to hear about it.
